Maxmore W&S Motorsport secures championship one round before Macau finale

With two overall podium finishes and two AM class victories, Moritz Berrenberg has secured the SRO GT Cup AM Championship one round before the Macau finale. An impressive achievement for Maxmore W&S Motorsport in the debut year of the series.

A Weekend Full of Challenges

The Beijing weekend began with unexpected hurdles. The premiere at the spectacular street circuit led to significant delays: following track issues, a six-hour break after the first session resulted in a late start to the race weekend. Despite these setbacks, the team demonstrated strong performance. In the pre-qualifying session, Maxmore W&S Motorsport dominated with a clear advantage over the competition.

Later came a controversial race control decision: the qualifying session was stopped after each driver had completed only two warm-up laps – these were subsequently declared as the official qualifying. As a result, Berrenberg had to start from P7 in both races.

Spectacular Comeback in Both Races

Despite the unfavorable starting position, Berrenberg delivered an impressive performance. With a perfectly set-up car, the team managed to move forward in both races and maximize its potential.

Race 1: From P7 to the Lead in Four Laps

Berrenberg made a strong start to the first race and overtook several cars in the opening phase. By Turn 4 of the first lap, he had worked his way up to P3. In lap 2, he climbed to P2, and on lap 4 he took the overall lead. He held this position until the final lap when a technical issue cost him the victory. Nevertheless, Berrenberg secured P2 in the overall standings and his first AM class win of the weekend.

Race 2: Back on the Podium

After starting behind the safety car, Berrenberg worked his way to P5 early on. A crash in the leading group resulted in an extended safety car period. With only seven minutes of racing remaining, the W&S driver fought his way forward and secured P2 overall and P1 in the AM class.

Championship Title Secured in Debut Year

“I’m very happy with the results this weekend – two podiums, two AM wins – and proud that we’ve secured the SRO GT Cup championship one round early before Macau,” explained Berrenberg after the weekend.
Team Principal Daniel Schellhaas highlighted the team’s performance: “Despite the challenges with the track and the controversial qualifying regulations, we delivered a fantastic performance. Moritz worked his way in brilliantly and showed continuous development. The car was very, very fast, and we were able to finish both races in P2 overall and P1 in the AM class.”

Schellhaas emphasized the significance of the success: “Winning the SRO GT Cup championship in our debut year is incredible. At the same time, we’ve had a fantastic backdrop with the beautiful race tracks in China for this achievement. Now we’re looking forward to tackling the final race in Macau as champions. That will certainly be a unique experience. I’m very pleased to see that we can transfer our successes and processes to other continents, and it makes an even more significant difference here than in Europe! We look forward to further collaboration with Maxmore.”

Looking Ahead to the Macau Finale

With the AM championship secured, Maxmore W&S Motorsport heads to the Macau finale as champions. The legendary street race will be the crowning finale to an extraordinary debut season in the SRO GT Cup.
