Unavoidable accident ends SRO GT Cup finale early for Maxmore W&S Motorsport

At the season finale of the SRO GT Cup in Macau, Moritz Berrenberg delivered a strong performance at the demanding Guia street circuit in the Maxmore W&S Motorsport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport – even though his race ended early after an accident through no fault of his own.

Impressive qualifying despite minimal track time

Berrenberg’s preparation for the weekend took place largely in the simulator, making every lap on track even more valuable. In free practice he only managed one timed lap under green, but immediately felt comfortable on the circuit. In qualifying he was able to turn that limited experience into a strong lap: he secured fourth on the grid overall and pole position in the Am class – an impressive result on his Macau debut.

Early accident puts Berrenberg out of the race

In the race, Berrenberg was running in fourth place in the early stages, within reach of the leading group and on course for victory in the Am class. Then came the decisive moment at San Francisco corner: the car ahead hit the barriers and was bounced back onto the track – directly into Berrenberg’s path. On the narrow street circuit there was no room to avoid the impact, bringing an early end to his race.

Moritz Berrenberg on his weekend in Macau

“I spent many hours in the simulator beforehand to learn the Guia Circuit as well as possible, and that clearly paid off in qualifying. With very little track time in practice, to go straight to P4 overall and take pole in Am was a great feeling.

That made it even more disappointing that the race was over so early. The car in front of me hit the wall at San Francisco corner and came back onto my line – I had no chance to react.

Even so, the weekend was an unforgettable experience for me. Macau is an incredibly demanding and special circuit. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport felt really good, and the Maxmore W&S Motorsport team gave me a perfectly prepared car. I’m already looking forward to coming back and fighting for the podium.”

Team Principal Daniel Schellhaas with a positive conclusion

“For us, the finale in Macau brings a great season in China to a close. We’ve had many exciting races, discovered fantastic circuits and gained valuable experience on very different types of tracks. Macau was definitely the highlight – an extremely challenging circuit where Moritz did an incredible job.

We were very close to celebrating a podium here, which would have been something truly special. Even though it didn’t work out in the end, we are more than happy with the championship and very proud of what we have achieved together.

A big thank you to Maxmore and the entire team on site and in Europe, who made this programme possible and implemented it with so much commitment. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey together.”

Looking ahead

Even if the result in Macau does not reflect the potential that Berrenberg and Maxmore W&S Motorsport showed, the conclusion is clear: strong pace, a confident qualifying performance and a very promising debut on one of the most demanding street circuits in the world.

The team is already looking ahead to the coming season – with a clear goal: to return to Macau and be firmly in the fight for the podium.
