Podium and class wins for W&S Motorsport at the GTC Race in Hockenheim

W&S Motorsport finished on the podium in the GT4 class at the GTC Race and also celebrated two victories and two second places in the Trophy classification. Nico Gründel in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport #31 took the first podium finish of his career in the heat battle at the Hockenheimring and his colleagues Tim Horrell (#30) and Moritz Berrenberg (#32) also had reason to celebrate in the Trophy classification with first and second places.

The third weekend of the GTC Race took place in summer temperatures of up to 30 degrees and was a challenge for drivers and their cars. However, the W&S Motorsport team kept a cool head and adapted to the conditions. The drivers familiarised themselves with the course in the practice sessions and steadily improved their lap times.

Tim Horrell in the PARAVAN Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport #30 was coached by Hendrik Still this weekend and was able to put the ADAC GT4 Germany and NLS driver's advice into practice. The paraplegic American was able to consistently improve his performance and achieved his best result of the season so far with third place in qualifying for the GT Sprint 2 race and fourth place in the GT60 powered by Pirelli. In the end, he took two fourth places and sixth place in the GT4 class and two victories in the Trophy classification.

The weekend also went well for Marko Elser and Nico Gründel in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport #31. The duo were always in the top four in all qualifying sessions and races, and on Sunday Nico Gründel was delighted to secure the first podium of his career in the GT4 class with third place in the individual race.

Moritz Berrenberg in the sister car #32 also reeled off important race kilometres and finished in sixth, seventh and fifth place. In the Trophy classification, he finished second in both GT Sprint races.

From 30 August to 1 September 2024, the GTC Race will be staged at the legendary racetrack in Spa-Francorchamps.

Quotes after the race

Daniel Schellhaas, Team Principal W&S Motorsport: "It was a good weekend and our drivers continuously improved over the course of the sessions. Tim has made great progress and only just missed out on the GT4 podium. What he achieved in the car with his handicap deserves the greatest respect and it is even more difficult in these hot temperatures. Congratulations to Nico on his first podium, that was a great race! Weekends like this show that the hard work and preparation pays off. We will continue like this to achieve even more good results."

Tim Horrell, Driver #30: "It was a hot weekend that required lots of focus. The pace was there at points throughout the weekend, but I still have to work on my consistency. Big thanks to my coach Hendrik who taught me a lot and gave me lots of confidence. And as always, I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team W&S Motorsport and PARAVAN. Thank you!"

Nico Gründel, Driver #31: "After a difficult start to the race, I found a consistent pace. Without making any major mistakes myself, I was able to capitalise on the mistakes of the other drivers and seize the opportunity for my first podium. Thanks to the great support from W&S Motorsport, I made great progress throughout the weekend; this success was unthinkable at the start of the weekend."
